Onaktiewe of Afgestorwe Uitvoerders

Vereistes

Exporters urged to register on internet database

The Department of Trade and Industry says it is essential for all exporters who want to get their own details as well as full particulars of the products and services that they wish to export listed on its internet exporters database.

In line with all official export promotion organisations worldwide, Trade and Investment SA (TISA), the export promotion division of the Department of Trade and Industry has to keep accurate records of their client base - all existing South African exporters. A new exporters database was created to serve this purpose.

This database will become the sole official source of "who exports what" in South Africa and will be used in TISA, the Department in Pretoria as well as the regional offices and all the SA missions abroad (where the Department maintains offices as well as the rest) as the exclusive export reference guide. Although it will not be implemented for a while, consideration is being given to the idea that EMIA incentives will only be available to exporters registered on this database.

All import enquiries received from abroad and all market research undertaken by the Department's foreign economic representatives, as well as all pro-active export promotion drives will only be brought to the attention of exporters who have registered on this database.

The origin of the export database is the list of actual exporters as compiled over a period until June 2000. If a producer successfully exported in the 24 months prior to that date, his/her company name and SA Revenue Service (SARS) number has been captured and the registration process can proceed on the website.

New Exporters

A facility has been created for new exporters to also register on this database after they have obtained a SA Revenue Service number from their nearest SARS office. When an exporter has his/her SARS number, the next step is to call the Export Call Center at (012) 310-2000 and ask them to capture his/her details on the database. This is followed by a verification process at the Department of Trade and Industry after which he/she will be able to log on and add details to those originally recorded.

Inactive or deceased Exporters

To solve the problem of only keeping record of live and potential exporters but to eliminate deceased companies or deadwood from the list, it has been decided to create a website hosted exporters database that will be self-maintained by exporters. The Department has also incorporated a process that will auto-eliminate inactive exporters after an appropriate period of not generating any export transactions.

Consent to make details public

Due to certain confidentiality obligations, information on registered exporters can only be made public (made accessible through a website) upon the consent of each exporter. Exporters are therefore asked to give consent (by clicking the consent icon on the website) that specific details can be displayed on the Departments export website. If consent is not given, only some officials at the Department will have access to the information provided and new importers will not be aware of your existence.

Requirements

Producers must be registered with the SARS, formerly the Department of Customs and Excise, as an exporter (i.e. he/she must have a nine digit - or lower - SARS code) AND they must be registered on this system, before they can log in and add further details. The operators have tried to avoid duplication by abandoning the old Department exporters registration number and they will in future only need the SARS number and password to register and access the database.

The Exporters Database will ultimately be hosted on TISAs new website but can now be found at: http://www2.dti.gov.za/exportersdb/default.asp.
